This original Champagne cork shape is the result of :

. The evolution over the centuries of the outlines of the Gallo-Roman city from the central thoroughfare constituted by the Agrippa Way (now called Rue de la Cité).
. Successive derivations of the course of the Seine.
. Fortifications – moats, towers, gates – built at the time of the Champagne Fairs and replaced in XIC c. by boulevards and gardens that now encircle the city.
